Gut Health for Fertility

Optimise Your Gut Health to improve chances of conceiving

In preparation for trying for a baby, couples who are investing in the preconception phase can increase their chances at conceiving through improving their gut health. This can be as simple as making a few tweaks / improvements to the diet and cleaning up their exposure to environmental triggers, chemicals and toxins.

By improving the diversity of the good bacteria in your gut (your MICROBIOME) and eating foods that nourish, heal and sustain you, you are in good stead for not only feeling great, but passing on better genetic material and immune health to your bub. This can mean less asthma, allergies, behavioural issues and eczema.

DYSBIOSIS is an imbalance of the microbiome. When it comes to fertility, your gut microbiome can make a significant difference. Poor gut health and an imbalanced microbiome can directly influence your whole body, your immune system and most importantly your hormones leading to an oestrogen imbalance.

Through good dietary choices and the correct strains of pre and probiotics then you are also reducing inflammation, improving symptoms such as bloating, reflux, fatigue, diarrhoea or constipation and helping correct hormonal imbalances.

Some tips to improve your microbiome for fertility

·         Include PREbiotic foods each day (prebiotic foods may be even more important than probiotics as they actually feed the beneficial probiotics in your gut and vagina)

·          Eat PRObiotic foods daily (sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir, yoghurts)

·         Avoid environmental toxins (this is something we explore during my preconception program)

·         Reduce stress levels

·         Improve quality of sleep

·         Reduce or eliminate alcohol, caffeine, processed sugar and processed foods

·         Pesticides and chemicals can alter your beneficial gut flora, choose organic where possible.

·         Eat an abundance of plant foods and fibre (Prebiotics – think fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, legumes and pulses and gluten free whole grains)

Diet is the key for gut health. You can take all the supplements to heal your gut, but if you don’t change your diet, reduce your stress and improve your sleep then are always going to have to rely on that additional support.
